On popular demand..
As a part of our MT programme, i spent three months in Budayun district in U.P. One of the stints dealt with rural distribution.
We were trying to increase trials of cream biscuits in Budayun dist in UP through the Choupal network. Movement of the chocolate variant from the rural retailers was relatively poor. So it was decided that we will carry out sampling of the product before the variant is stocked with the rural retailer.
During the exercise, the consumers sitting outside a village retailer were given the biscuits to sample and the following happened:
Coarse remarks ( And beleive me Rural UP junta can get ugly) were passed on to us and capitalism.
Reason: The farmer thought the bitter taste of chocolate was due to the fact that the cream was burnt and since the company did not want to waste the same, they launched this variant.
Bizarre…So much for Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid
P.S. I know the above incident does not deal with travels.
